ie6isyourfault
Who’s fault is IE6? Many, well most, would say that it’s M$. They say things like “If they would just add IE7 to XP now…”, or “They just bundled it with the OS, but if they just…”, or my all time favorite “Well, unfortunately is has a X% of market share, so…”

This is complete and utter bullshit. IE6 is still alive because of people who support it by default like the examples above. People who say “Our sites are compatible even with IE6!” and who say “The plugin/script/wiget/whatever is compatible with IE6.”

WHAT THE FUCK

It’s so fucking simple. If no one supports it, people upgrade. Does any major retailer STILL sell N64’s? Of course not. Anyone still selling a PS1s? Fuck no they aren’t. If they stop selling them the game makers are able to make even better games and they make more money.

If people want to pay extra to support it, great! That’s awesome! You can get more money out of them. Many sites do still need to support it, but just because a few sites NEED to support it, doesn’t mean every developer needs to follow along. Just as a few specialty stores still sell N64s, Dreamcasts, and PS1s doesn’t mean the majority of the electronic stores need to carry them.

This goes out to all the developers, just stop fucking developing for it by default!

OK, I need something drink now.

That reminds me, I’ve been meanig to change my resume to say, I no longer support IE6 . I’ve even added no support JavaScript popups on some sites!

Nice post. Sounds like an inner monologue I would have when thinking about the things I hate the most about my job. :)

Yea that would be possible if it was all about the dev and not about the client.

The client expect the website to work on all browsers that they got significant shares on it.

Now most people include in the contract if they support ie6 or not by default, most people degrade in ie7 and ie6, meaning the website is still viable, just less beautiful, which is a very good option.

but hey, IE6 has been a part of the web for sometimes now (10 years..), so unless your a junior, coding for it is not that hard.

Also by a few I guess you mean a lot. All websites with a lot of traffics generally needs it, if 5% of their user base use ie6, this is still a very significant share.

This is a old topic tho, this has been debate on and on. But sometimes I feel devs are just winning because the job is hard, hey its your job to make the website compatible for your client, your suppose to be the expert at it. Its not about choosing for the clients whats relevant for him.

Interesting… I am leaving this message in IE 6. If you want some credibility stop supporting IE 6. IE 6 rules, especially on Windows 2000 which is the last Windows version to allow you to install it as many times as you want to.

IE 6 is my first browser choice and then if that does not work my fallback in Firefox. Typically IE 6 is much faster than any other browser except for Javascript heavy websites and I just happen to hate javascript. Even in Firefox heavy Javascript tends to hang and it takes a long time to download. Then lazy developers just include huge JS files which they use 2% of the functionality of.

Write to standards. If those standards are adopted by old browsers chances are you don’t care about those viewers anyway.

Even Microsoft says it’s time to get a modern browser.

They don’t have significant share anymore though. Hasn’t been for years, even when i wrote this in 2009 it didn’t have majority anymore. And I’m sorry, the fact people despise IE6 so much isn’t because 99.9% of the web devs are juniors. Try to get canvas working on it. SVG, videos, games, anything. It works like shit. Yeah, sure, coding up a site that has no JavaScript you could possibly get away with it working, but once you throw IE6 even a slight curveball it shits it self. You can’t even fade in/out an element without it getting grainy and nasty and the text becoming unreadable.

5% is NOT a lot. 95% use something else and you’re worried about IE6? You have to be kidding me.

We’re not complaining because it makes it harder, it makes it IMPOSSIBLE. Why do you think Google who has endless amount of resources stopped supporting it. Facebook? And i could go on and on. IE6 just doesn’t support even the simplest things.

I’m guessing you’re a coder, not a programmer?
